Hey everyone! Happy February!!! I can’t believe how fast this year is going bye. I was just saying the other day that I feel like January never happened. It’s crazy. We are only a week away from Valentine’s Day! Yay! I really enjoy this Holiday. Emery and I do celebrate but we don’t do anything fancy. We really try to keep it fun and laid back. Our first Valentine’s day Emery made me dinner. He made me hot dogs…yes hot dogs!! I love them haha… and we also had chips and macaroni salad. It was a great little picnic. Ever since then we keep it just as fun and simple.
One of my favorite things to hand out for Valentine’s Day is food. It is the best gift for everyone. And if you made it, it’s even more special. Today we are making heart cutout cookies. They are super simple and super cute! Everyone will be sure to love them.
If you have been following me on social media you will know that I have been taking cookie decorating classes. I am in love with this. Even though I have a long way from being awesome at decorating with royal icing, I am having a ton of fun practicing. The heart cutout cookies are a good starting point. There isn’t much detail in the cookies, so if you are a beginner this is a great place to begin learning.
Currently I am using the flourboxbakery.com recipes for the cookie dough and royal icing. Because I am new to this I haven’t tested my own recipes yet. However, I love the taste of this cookie and icing so it will be hard to beat. I recommend her recipes. You can find the royal icing recipe here, and the cookie dough recipe here.
Once your heart cutout cookies have baked and cooled you can being to ice them. Simply outline the heart and then flood the middle. Let the cookie dry completely before writing on the cookies. Let the writing dry before layering or packaging them.
It is as simple as 1, 2, 3! If you are new to decorating, try not to mix too many colors. I stuck with three colors for the hearts and used white to write. You can stick to one color or two if you want to make it even more simple.
Once you are done decorating the heart cutout cookies, hand them out to your valentine’s. They will fall in love for sure!
Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Baking!!!
